Your website is slow, and it is costing you enquiries

The number that matters

Test your site on a phone, on mobile data, not on office wifi. That is the condition most of your visitors are in. If the main content takes more than about three seconds to appear, you are losing people who will never appear in any report because they left before the page rendered.

What actually causes it

• Images uploaded straight from a camera or phone at full resolution
• Sliders and carousels that load six large images to show one
• Page builders stacking dozens of scripts and stylesheets
• Fonts loaded from several sources with no fallback
• Chat widgets, popups, review widgets and tracking scripts, each adding weight
• Cheap shared hosting with slow server response

Fix in this order

Images first — it is usually more than half the problem and the easiest to fix. Resize to the largest size actually displayed, convert to a modern format, and enable lazy loading below the fold.

Then remove what nobody uses. Most sites carry two or three third-party widgets that were added for a trial and never taken out.

Then hosting and caching. This is where a genuinely slow server shows up, and no amount of front-end work compensates for a slow response time.

Why it matters twice

Speed affects both what Google is willing to rank and what visitors are willing to wait for. It is one of the few improvements that helps the paid and organic sides at the same time.
