Do I need a new website, or can mine be fixed?

Most agencies will tell you to rebuild, because a rebuild is worth more to them. Often the existing site can be fixed for a fraction of the cost.

A rebuild is warranted when

• The site cannot be edited without a developer
• It is not usable on a phone — not "a bit cramped", genuinely unusable
• It is unfixably slow, usually because of the platform or a page builder
• It sits on software nobody supports any more, or a builder you cannot export from
• Its structure cannot grow — no way to add service or location pages
• You do not own it, or cannot get the logins

A fix is enough when

• It looks dated but works
• It is slow because of unoptimised images — usually most of the problem
• It converts badly because of the offer, the form or the layout
• It is missing pages rather than broken

The test worth running first

Open your site on a phone, on mobile data, away from your office wifi. Time how long until you can read something. Then try to find your own phone number without scrolling twice. Most of the time that exercise tells you what to do.

Cost either way

A small business site in Calgary typically runs $2,500–$8,000. A speed and conversion fix on an existing site is usually $800–$2,500. Get both quoted before deciding.
