Why the profile matters more than the website

For most local service businesses in Calgary, the three listings Google shows above the normal results produce more phone calls than the website does. That block — the map pack — is driven almost entirely by your Google Business Profile, not by your site.

Which makes it remarkable how many profiles sit half-finished. In audits we run, the average local business has completed perhaps 60% of the fields available, and the missing 40% is usually the part that influences ranking.

The complete checklist

• Primary category chosen precisely — not "contractor" when "flooring store" exists
• Secondary categories added for every service you genuinely offer
• Service areas listed as the suburbs and towns you actually travel to
• Full opening hours, including holiday hours set in advance
• Services list completed with descriptions, not just names
• Products added where the category supports them
• At least 20 real photos, geotagged, added over time rather than in one batch
• Business description written around what people search, within the 750-character limit
• Booking or quote link connected
• Questions and answers seeded with the questions you get on the phone
• Posts published at least monthly
• Every review answered, including the good ones

The three most commonly missed

Holiday hours are the biggest single avoidable loss. A business shown as closed on a long weekend when it is open loses an entire trading day of calls, and Google surfaces that closure prominently.

Secondary categories are the second. Most businesses pick one category and stop, which means they never appear for adjacent services they genuinely offer and could rank for easily.

Q&A is the third, and it is the one nobody touches. Anybody can answer a question on your listing — including a competitor. Seeding it with your own real questions and answers is both a ranking signal and basic defence.

How long before it shows

Faster than most SEO work. A profile that goes from half-complete to fully complete usually shows movement in two to six weeks, which makes it the highest-return first job on almost every account we take over.
