How much does SEO cost in Calgary?
Honest ranges for what SEO actually costs in the Calgary market, what sits behind each price band, and how to tell an underpriced package from a fair one.
Prices reflect the Calgary and Alberta market. Last reviewed September 2026.
The short answer
Most Calgary small businesses paying for ongoing SEO land somewhere between $800 and $3,000 per month. One-off projects — an audit, a technical clean-up, a set of location pages — usually run between $1,000 and $5,000 depending on the size of the site.
That is a wide range because "SEO" covers everything from filling in a Google Business Profile to rebuilding the architecture of a 400-page site. What matters is not the number but what sits behind it.
What the market charges
| One-off SEO audit | $750 – $2,500 — a written review with a prioritised fix list |
|---|---|
| Google Business Profile setup | $400 – $1,200 — one-off, often the highest-return job available |
| Local SEO retainer | $800 – $1,800 / month — map pack, listings, reviews, a handful of pages |
| Standard SEO retainer | $1,500 – $3,000 / month — content, on-page, technical, link building |
| Competitive or multi-location SEO | $3,000 – $8,000+ / month — larger sites, several markets |
| Technical SEO project | $1,500 – $6,000 — speed, indexing, migrations, structured data |
| Content, per page | $250 – $700 per service or location page, written and published |
These are market ranges rather than our price list. We quote each business individually, because scope and competitiveness vary enormously.
What actually drives the price
- Competitiveness of your category. Ranking a specialist industrial supplier is a different job from ranking a Calgary dentist.
- Size and state of the site. A ten-page site built last year needs far less than a 300-page site nobody has touched since 2018.
- How many locations you serve. Each genuine service area needs its own content, not a suburb name swapped into the same paragraph.
- How much content is missing. Most of the cost in year one is writing pages that should already exist.
- Whether you can supply information. Agencies charge more when they have to extract every fact by interview.
Why $299/month packages do not work
You will see SEO offered for a few hundred dollars a month. Do the arithmetic: at agency rates that buys two to four hours. Two hours a month cannot research, write, publish, build authority and report.
What those packages usually deliver is an automated report, a handful of directory submissions and a keyword ranking screenshot for terms nobody searches. In the worst cases they buy links from networks, which costs you positions later that are expensive to recover.
If the budget genuinely is a few hundred dollars a month, spend it on a properly completed Google Business Profile and a review process instead. That is a real return; a token retainer is not.
How to compare quotes fairly
- Ask what is delivered each month, in specific nouns — pages written, fixes implemented, listings built
- Ask who does the work and where they are based
- Ask to see an example monthly report from a real client, with figures redacted
- Ask what happens to the work if you leave — do you keep the pages and the accounts?
- Ask what they would fix first, before any retainer starts
- Be suspicious of guaranteed rankings, and of anyone who quotes before looking at your site
What we would tell you to do first
Before committing to any retainer, get an audit. It costs a fraction of a year of SEO, it tells you whether the problem is content, technical or simply that nobody has claimed your listing, and a good one is useful whether or not you hire the agency that wrote it.
If your website is slow, unfixable or not mobile-friendly, fix that before spending anything on SEO. Otherwise you are paying to send people somewhere that loses them.
